Signs to Identify Round Ligament Pain

Round ligament pain symptoms are a common side effect of pregnancy. Pregnant women experience a wide range of symptoms. This occurs in the lower abdomen, hips, or pelvic region. Most women complain about this in their second trimester. During pregnancy, it can happen over time.

Causes of Round Ligament Pain Symptoms

Round ligaments are flexible, band-like supportive structures on the sides of the uterus. These are generally thick and firm but can become soft and stretchy during pregnancy. Usually, they stretch and get back to their original place slowly. During pregnancy, the growing weight of the uterus adds strain to these ligaments. Also, any quick activity can make these ligaments snap back into shape like a spring. This results in a sharp, piercing ache in the lower belly or groin area.

Symptoms of round ligament pain

Symptoms

It can be a sudden, jab-like feeling in some women and a dull aching sensation in others.

  • Feels like a twisting or tugging sensation on the sides or groin.
  • Intense, jabbing pain around the abdomen that is brief.
  • The pelvic bone feels sharpness.
  • You may feel pain at the end of an activity.

This can hurt, but the discomfort only lasts for a short while, usually a few seconds. It does not need any treatment. The pain subsides when you change your current position or posture. Light stretches or exercises your doctor recommends can help deal with the pain. Learn more about the causes of stomach pain in the second trimester here.

You should be on the lookout for other symptoms along with this pain and notify your doctor if they feel abnormal. If you are experiencing bleeding, a burning sensation when urinating, a high temperature, or increasing pain in combination with round ligament pain, you should seek medical help immediately.
