Round ligaments are supportive structures that surround your womb. To support the growing uterus, they resemble wires. As you advance into your second trimester, round ligaments tend to stretch and cause a sudden jab of pain once in a while.

It is normal to experience pain due to round ligaments during pregnancy. Typically, you will feel an ache or discomfort in the pelvic area or on the right side of your belly, but it is possible to handle it on both sides.

This pain may begin as early as the first trimester, but most women experience it in the second half of the pregnancy because of round ligaments during pregnancy; not every woman experiences this pain. Some women may not feel any discomfort at all.

Round ligaments usually flex slowly, like spam. The growing baby’s weight in the womb adds pressure to these ligaments. The sudden shifting can make these ligaments tight from their relaxed state, and this can cause sharp, intense pain.

Round Ligament Pain

Round ligament pain is caused by;

  • Shifting your position when sleeping
  • Getting up quickly from the sitting position
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Laughing
  • Sudden jerky movements

This pain is known to last only a short while and goes away on its own as you relax. There is no need to take medication for this symptom. Try to flex your body ahead to avoid discomfort when coughing or sneezing.

Pain in the lower abdominal area may be a common pregnancy symptom, but it can sometimes be due to another health issue. See a doctor if a fever or chills accompany your pain. Your doctor must be contacted immediately if pain worsens, occurs while urinating, or is bleeding. It may become alarmed if this happens.
