The countdown to delivering your baby is one filled with excitement and anxiety. Based on how the baby is developing and your health condition during the last trimester, your obstetrician may decide to perform a C-section. It is major surgery and post-operative care is important to fast recovery. Here are a few C-Section: Tips for a Fast Recovery.
1. Rest well
As with any other surgery, rest is the key to fast recovery from c-section as well. The body needs plenty of time to heal and you need to give it a good six weeks to get back to some form. However, you may need to factor in the fact that you have an infant to take care of while you are recovering. Getting rest as you want may not be possible as the baby may demand your attention at all odd times.
Top tip– rest when your baby is resting.
2. Pamper your body
It is not unusual to forget caring for yourself in the excitement of welcoming the new member of your family. However, remember that a little extra care will not go a long way in speeding up the healing process. Follow certain dos and don’ts. Take help from your spouse, parents or relatives in discharging household chores. Restrict climbing stairs, avoid lifting heavy weights and support your abdomen when you cough or sneeze. These precautions will protect the site of incision and prevent opening of the stitches.
Top tip – Do not hesitate to seek help for emotional and physical health.
3. Pain relief
Though pain is considered a part of the process, do not be under the impression that you need to bear the pain. All pain is not healthy and seeking your doctor’s help for pain management is wiser than suffering from pain that can be relieved, especially when you have a baby to depending on you. From home remedies to over-the-counter medications, your doctor will prescribe the right pain reliever based on the level of discomfort.
Top tip – Do not self medicate with pain killers as it can be dangerous for you and your baby.
4. Good nutrition
Continuing the nutritious diet you consumed during the pregnancy is a good idea. If anything you need more nutrition now. So eat high protein and energy meals at regular intervals. Also, keep yourself sufficiently hydrated.
Top tip – Do not forget to include fiber to prevent constipation.
