Women are experiencing pelvic pain during pregnancy. Sometimes, the pain is so intense that they can’t sleep peacefully.

Causes of Pelvic aches

Pain in the pelvic region may be caused by stretching, abdominal muscles, pressure from round ligaments, loosening of the symphysis pubis joint, and other changes. Most pains and cramps come and go on their own, are occasional, and last only a short while.

Joint problems can cause severe pain. The hormonal changes cause the ligaments and joints to relax and loosen up, allowing the baby to pass through during childbirth. Sometimes, the ligaments holding the pelvic bone in place stretch much ahead of your term’s completion. A lot of people complain of pelvic girdle pain. You can feel pain in your groin area, hips, lower back, and pelvic region.

Pregnant women are often advised to sleep on their sides, preferably the left side, when they reach the third trimester. Blood flow to the fetus is at high risk when sleeping on your back. While finding a comfortable position is difficult during the last trimester for most women, it is even more challenging for women with pelvic pain during pregnancy. Spouses with serious pelvic pain will need to sleep on their sides.

How to sleep with Pelvic Pain?

  • The pillows are very useful during child bearing. You may consider investing in a body or pregnancy pillow specially customized to provide comfort.
  • Pillows between the knees help align the pelvis and reduce the pressure on the hips and pelvis while sleeping.
  • You may place a suitable pillow under your belly if your back hurts. It helps in easing the movements of your pelvis and spine.
  • You may wear a supporting abdominal band to help correct the alignment of the pelvis and alleviate pain.
  • You may try sleeping in an inclined position to help you get comfortable.
  • There are pillow comforts to help you sleep.
  • You may consult a prenatal chiropractor specializing in adjustments and alignments to help relieve pelvic and back pains.
