Nose bleeds during pregnancy is the most common condition because of rapid hormonal changes. Though they are short, they can be heavy. Sometimes they can be very terrifying, but as long as you don’t lose much blood, there is nothing to worry about it. Most of the nose bleeds during pregnancy can be treated at home.

Nose Bleeds during PregnancyYou can observe bleeding either from one nostril or both. Bleeding can range from light or heavy and it can last for few seconds to few minutes. This condition occurs during your sleep. When you lay down, before you observe blood from the nose, you may feel liquid in the back of your throat. Also, during pregnancy, most women may feel blocked nose than usual.

In case you have a frequent cold, allergy or sinus infection, the occurrence of nose bleeds during pregnancy is more. There are certain medical problems that can cause nosebleeds such as trauma, clotting disorders, and high blood pressure.

Nose bleeds during pregnancy won’t cause any harm to the mother and the baby. As there is higher blood flow during pregnancy, there is a great chance to burst these delicate blood vessels and thus resulting in a nosebleed.

How to stop nose bleeds during pregnancy?

  • Whenever you observe nosebleed, sit straight and thoroughly squeeze the soft portion of the nose i.e. above the nostrils at least for 10 minutes.
  • Bend forward and take breathe from the mouth. It will cause draining down from the nose rather than down the back of the throat.
  • Don’t lie down, instead stay upright. This posture will control your blood pressure in the veins and control further bleeding.
  • Keep the pressure on your nose for at least 20 minutes so that the blood will clot.
  • Put a covered ice pack on the nose ridge.
  • Don’t bend down, blow your nose and rigorous activity for at least 12 hours after a nosebleed.

How to avoid getting nose bleeds during pregnancy?

  • Drinking lots of fluids will help to keep mucous membranes well hydrated.
  • Blowing should be gentle because rigorous blowing can lead nosebleed.
  • Open your mouth whenever you sneeze.
  • Lubricants can help to prevent nasal dryness.
  • Don’t stay in dry air conditions. Avoid irritants like smoke that can irritate your nostrils.
  • Avoid using decongestants and medicated nasal sprays. They can make your nostrils dry and further irritate your nose.

If you can’t control your bleeding, you should consult your health care provider.
