If you are planning to undergo IVF, you need to discuss the IVF risks and side effects with your doctor. It is highly recommended that you are completely aware of all the possible risks involved.

Here are the most common ivf risks and side effects:

Treatment failure

Failure of the treatment is one of the most common ivf risks and side effects. For some patients, IVF doesn’t work for the first time while for some other it never works. Various things should be considered for the success of this procedure, such as woman’s eggs and uterus abnormalities.

Reaction to drugs

Fertility drugs can cause various IVF risks and side effects, such as irritability, hot flashes, restlessness, headaches, and feeling down. Usually, symptoms will disappear after a particular time period, but if they exist for a longer period, you should consult your doctor.

Miscarriage

As soon as you conceive after undergoing the IVF treatment, your doctor will suggest you get an ultrasound scan to know the possibility of miscarriage. The scan is suggested to be done about two weeks after the positive pregnancy test.

Multiple Births

Any fertility treatment has 90% chances of giving multiple births. Your doctor needs to discuss this kind of ivf risk while deciding the number of embryos to transfer in your treatment.

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is the most common among all the IVF risks and side effects. In this condition, the fertilized egg becomes stuck in the fallopian tubes. If this condition occurs, the embryo should be removed in order to avoid any kind of life-threatening medical conditions.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

This condition occurs in some patients. It results in ovarian swelling associated with severe pain and results in the formation of the ovarian cysts. In rare situations, this condition can lead the ovary to twist and cut down the supply of blood or even leads to blood clots. In several situations, you need to undergo medical treatments or even hospitalization to reduce the symptoms of OHSS.

OHSS is characterized by lower abdominal swelling, discomfort, and nausea. Even you may also notice vomiting and difficulty breathing. If you won’t notice any decrease in these symptoms, you should immediately consult your doctor. During such conditions, make sure that you take plenty of fluids, such as water, fruit juices, milk, or any isotonic fruit drinks.

Egg collection

There is a possibility of infection while collecting the eggs. Though it is a normal condition, it only needs antibiotic treatment. In very rare cases, this infection can become severe and it may damage the ovaries and fallopian tubes, which needs surgical treatment to remove.
