The nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy are attributed to the high levels of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin(HCG). Other hormones like progesterone which in high levels result in smooth-muscle relaxation, slowing down the digestive process, may also are responsible for nausea. The beginning of the second trimester brings a relief from nausea for most pregnant woman. There are also a few home remedies that are helpful for nausea relief.

Preventing Nausea

A natural part of pregnancy, perhaps the easiest manner of getting relief would be to avoid the most common triggers of nausea like the smell of fried foods, stuffy rooms and other sharp smells. Brushing is known to trigger nausea in some cases, especially in combination with an empty stomach. Although brushing can’t be avoided, try not to brush on an empty stomach. Similarly, having frequent small meals and avoiding an empty stomach also helps prevent nausea. Lemon drop candies and ginger are also helpful. Rest and relaxation are the traditionally recommended remedies. No matter the amount of nausea, prevent dehydration by sipping juices and water.

Some other theories that are frequently recommended for nausea include listening to music, eating Vitamin B6- rich food or taking Vitamin B supplements, acupressure, cultivating hobbies and keeping the mind occupied. Pregnant women are encouraged to take up light hobbies like knitting, embroidery, etc. as they help in relaxing. Yoga is yet another activity that is encouraged for relaxation

Complementary Therapies

Many complementary therapies claim to be effective in overcoming nausea. They are however subjective and the results vary from person to person. Always choose a trained and experienced complementary practitioner to help you cope with nausea in early pregnancy. Some common complementary theories include osteopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, reflexology, hypnotherapy and homeopathy.

The choice of therapy would vary depending on individual liking. Both osteopathy and chiropractic treatment may be effective for persons who had joint or posture problems in the past. Aromatherapy though relaxing might worsen nausea because of the smell of the oils being used. Some essential oils which may help in nausea relief are peppermint, spearmint, lime, lemon and ginger. Similarly, if done incorrectly, reflexology might worsen symptoms. Always consult a registered practitioner and be prepared for symptoms to worsen before getting any relief from pregnancy related problems.

In case the symptoms experienced due to pregnancy are worsened by stress, anxiety, emotional issues or fear, hypnotherapy is highly effective. However there are no clinical evidences to support this theory. In a similar vein, there are no studies to support the effectiveness of homeopathy for pregnancy related nausea. Homeopathic treatment should be undertaken only under the supervision of a qualified, registered practitioner.

Medical help is necessary in cases of excessive vomiting coupled with more than 5% decrease in body weight.
