Of course, being pregnant means you are going to put on weight, but make sure that the pregnancy weight gain by month must be in a healthy way. Don’t put yourself in trouble with being overweight. There are a number of things to monitor your weight but you should also be aware of a few things which could reduce your weight during pregnancy.

As per the physician’s suggestions, a healthy expectant woman can put on her weight from 10-12 weeks. Mothers with overweight can afford to gain up to 25-35 pounds. The weight gain of a pregnant woman depends on her weight before conception, which varies from person to person. If a pregnant lady is obese then she should limit her weight gain to 15-25 pounds and try to lose excess weight before planning to get pregnant. In the first three months of pregnancy, you could lose a little weight because of morning sickness. But it will not affect your baby as her nutrient needs are met by the body.

What happens if the pregnancy weight gain by month is more or less than recommended?

  • According to recent studies, a pregnant lady who gains too much weight is at higher risk for having premature birth or c-section. They also remain with too much weight even after delivery and have a higher weight in further subsequent pregnancies. The mothers who start pregnancy with overweight will be at higher risk for compilations including preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
  • The risk for women with overweight during pregnancy will be less than for the women who are already having too much weight before the conception.
  • Pregnant women who are obese or overweight before pregnancy will face problems in continuing breastfeeding, poor milk production, and difficulty positioning the baby for nursing.
  • Women who begin pregnancy with underweight are at higher risk of delivering a low-birth-weight baby or preterm infant. Preterm birth can lead to different kinds of health problems.
  • The pregnancy weight gain estimator is used to check out how much you must gain based on your height and pre-pregnancy weight.

Apart from that Body Mass Index (BMI), helps you in calculating your weight in relation to height. Work out your BMI by just entering the weight that you were before you conceived.

  • Less than 18.5 is considered underweight
  • 18.5-24.9 falls under healthy
  • 25-29.9 is considered over-weight
  • Over 30 is taken as obese
